Lesson 5: Forms of Data Collection and Teams

Momentary Time Sampling- Checkpoint Method

  • Attend to the presence or absence of the target behavior…
  • Target Behaviors: can be social emotional and self regulation behaviors or learning behaviors.
  • Simultaneously collecting data while engaging in instruction
  • Record data for each ____second interval within ______minute sessions at each decided upon MOMENT/Check point.
  • Use an interval timer- app on phone that provides prompts ever _________seconds
  • Observer doesn’t have to watch the child the whole time and info is only collected at the given time markers

Partial Interval Recording-

  • Low rate behavior
  • Once we see it we don’t have to keep recording.
  • Did it occur at all in the interval?  (Hour, five minutes or 15 minutes)
  • Record IF the behavior occurred in an interval NOT how may times record at the end but could occur at anytime in the interval.
  • Percentage of intervals not percentage of time.
  • A child does not have to do the behavior throughout the whole time period but may do it one time.

Whole Interval Recording:

  • You have to see behavior the whole interval
  • On Task Behavior… They held attention for the whole time.  This is used to look for continuous behavior.
  • What is a good day verses a bad day and what does that really mean ?
  • 15 seconds of attention vs. 5 minutes of attention
  • Usually very brief intervals
  • If on task 1 whole interval out of 10 intervals, he was on task 10% of the time.

Frequency Recording:

Frequency recording is a way to measure the number of times a behavior occurs within a given period. Frequency recording is best for behaviors with a distinct beginning and end.  To conduct an event or frequency tally:

1. Note the time the observation begins.

2. Record each occurrence of the behavior. Teachers can easily do this by making a tally mark for each occurrence of the behavior.

3. Record the time the observation ends.

Whatever method we use to record…The data should be compiled and analyzed to inform practice
