Paraprofessional Spotlight: Ruth Thompson

At OPEPP, we know paraprofessionals bring heart, dedication, and care to their daily work. Ruth Thompson, a paraprofessional with the Fairfield County ESC, is a shining example of how self-care fuels success in the classroom.

Ruth has spent years supporting students while continuously growing her skills. During the 2024–2025 school year, she attended several OPEPP workshops, including What Do You Sense?, Supporting Paras Through Mentoring, Behavior Management, and TIPS for Relationships, taught by her supervisor, Sheri McClurg. Through these experiences, Ruth discovered that taking care of herself is essential to being fully present for her students.

Her approach is simple but powerful:

  • Be prepared for the day. “Take care of yourself and be ready,” she says.
  • Eat well and connect. Lunchtime conversations with colleagues provide energy and support.
  • Transition with joy. Singing during her commute helps her unwind and reset.
  • Lean on your supports. Family, faith, and colleagues keep her grounded.

Reflecting on her work, Ruth shares, “When I feel calm, prepared, and supported, my students feel it, too. They respond to that energy—and it changes the whole day.”

Ruth’s thoughtful routines remind us that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. By caring for herself, she strengthens her ability to care for others, making a lasting difference in the lives of Ohio’s students.
