Paraeducators are often the unsung experts in the room—especially when it comes to assistive technology for children who are deaf, blind, or deafblind. Jaclyn Cottrell of Harrison Hills City Schools knows firsthand how these tools open doors for learning and connection.
“Every tool, every strategy we use is about one thing—helping kids connect, learn, and be part of their world,” Jaclyn says. “If I can make that happen, even in a small way, that’s a win.”
As a lead paraeducator, Jaclyn draws from years of experience supporting students with sensory impairments, navigating programs, devices, and communication scaffolds that bridge gaps and ensure every student can fully participate in class.
Through her active involvement with OPEPP workshops, Jaclyn has shared her expertise, helped shape the “Paras as Interveners” course, and inspired fellow paraeducators to grow their skills. This March, she’ll bring that same passion and real-world insight to her new role as co-instructor for the workshop, joining Libby Westerman and Jodi Dowell to deliver a powerful learning experience for paraeducators across Ohio.
