Building Sustainable Support for Paraprofessionals

When Northwest Local Schools joined the OPEPP partnership, their goal was clear: create lasting, districtwide systems that set every paraprofessional up for success. Over three years, the district formed a committed team, aligned its priorities, and stayed focused—even as leadership changed..

With strong support from the superintendent, the team worked intentionally to design a comprehensive onboarding plan that defines para roles, clarifies expectations, and fosters collaboration between teachers and paras across all schools. The result? New hires now have a clear starting point and consistent guidance to help them thrive from day one.

To make sure this progress sticks, Northwest created a detailed record of every step, decision, and resource developed during the process. This living archive ensures that new leaders and team members can build on the work without losing momentum.

“We knew this work was critical for supporting students,” says team lead Chevonne Neal. “OPEPP helped us create a plan that works for our district—and one that will last.”

Now, Northwest is expanding its efforts, embedding these systems into the district’s infrastructure to ensure paraprofessionals—and the students they support—benefit for years to come.
