In Unit 2, we explored some key dispositions which are important for being an effective mentor, and at the end of the unit we started to think about how these dispositions lay the foundation for essential mentoring skills. We will be examining these mentoring skills, throughout the remainder of the module, beginning with relationship building in Unit 3.

It is probably pretty evident to you how having positive expectations, a growth mindset, and a collaborative frame of mind would all support the building of a positive relationship with your mentee and help support effective teamwork. Building on those dispositions, this unit will focus on concepts and skills that promote the building of trusting, authentic, and collaborative relationships that enhance the productive teamwork required to support the learning of all students.

Outcomes for Relationships and Teamwork Unit:

  1. identify key dispositions that support the mentoring skills of collaborative relationships and team building;
  2. focus on a key skill necessary for relationship building: active listening;
  3. explore universal needs which must be met as a foundation for authentic relationships and effective team building; and
  4. discuss the concept of ecological validity and its relationship to building collaborative relationships
