Lesson 1: Introductory Scenario-Function of Behavior

0

Imagine that a student earned ipad time after earning all of her tokens on her token board. When her timer expires, the paraeducator says, “Ipad time is over. Show me how you can put the ipad in the bin.” The student whines loudly disturbing the other students. The paraeducator tries to convince the child to hop off the ipad and stop whining.  The child keeps playing.

Attention?– a desire for feedback

Access to Tangible Items?- a desire to gain preferred items

Escape?– a desire to avoid task or demands

Fulfillment of Sensory Needs?- a desire to receive or avoid sensations

If you chose ESCAPE you made a great choice

The student is possibly whining to escape the demand of  having to put the ipad away.

We would have to know more information around the situation and we would have to begin to see a pattern.

You could also say she wants to play with the ipad which is a tangible item so possibly the function is tangible (getting access to a preferred item).
