Introductory Challenge

This unit focuses on the kinds of lessons that teachers plan in order to teach the complex activity that is reading. These kinds of lessons vary depending on students’ grade levels and on the English Language Arts curriculum that the school district has chosen to follow.  However, they all seek to provide experiences that enable students to comprehend written material well.  As you go through this unit, think about what you consider to be basic to the success of all kinds of reading lessons, regardless of whether they are intended to provide experiences in recognizing new words, understanding new words, decoding, analyzing meaningful parts of words, reading aloud, understanding what’s written, or understanding how to learn from written materials.
