Back to: Module: Helping Students Read
Background
The Introductory Challenge for this unit asked you to imagine the differences between Maria and Julius’s experiences with reading. Take a moment to think about the similarities between them. Also think about what might be different.
Different challenges can affect learning to read. With so much similarity between Maria and Julius, it can be hard to see why Julius struggles. Which challenge discussed in this unit might account for Julius’s difficulties?
Procedure
Pick the challenge that you think most likely affects Julius’s reading. Think about how that challenge affects him academically, but also socially and emotionally. As an educator, what might you do to help him overcome this challenge? What supports can you provide?
- Write your ideas in a journal.
- If you’re completing this module with a group with other educators, share your ideas with several of the people or with the group as a whole
