Introduction to Transition to Work

This module on “Transition to Work” for paraeducators equips participants with the knowledge and skills to support students with disabilities in successfully transitioning from school to employment. It covers essential topics such as developing work skills, supporting individualized transition plans, fostering self-advocacy, and collaborating with families and community resources.

Glossary

Transition Planning: The process of preparing students with disabilities for life after school, including employment, independent living, and postsecondary education. It involves setting goals and identifying the supports needed to achieve them.

Work Readiness: A set of skills, behaviors, and attitudes that prepare students for success in the workplace, including punctuality, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Self-Advocacy: The ability of individuals to speak up for themselves, express their needs, and make decisions regarding their education, career, and personal goals.

Community-Based Instruction (CBI): An educational approach that uses real-world community settings to teach functional skills, such as job tasks, public transportation, and social interactions, to prepare students for life after school.

Work-Based Learning: Learning opportunities, such as internships, apprenticeships, or job shadowing, that provide students with practical experience in the workplace.

Job Portfolio: A collection of documents and artifacts that demonstrate an individual’s skills, work experience, and achievements, often used by students to showcase their abilities to potential employers.

Barriers to Employment: Challenges or obstacles that prevent individuals, particularly those with disabilities, from obtaining or maintaining employment. These can include lack of skills, social stigma, transportation issues, or workplace discrimination.

Vocational Training: Educational programs designed to teach students specific skills needed for a particular career or occupation, often focusing on practical, hands-on training.

Individualized Transition Plan (ITP): A customized plan outlining the transition goals, services, and supports for a student, typically developed during high school to ensure a successful move to adulthood.

Job Shadowing: An experiential learning opportunity where a student observes a professional in their work environment to gain insight into the job’s responsibilities and requirements.
